Kidney Cancer

Kidney cancer is a cancer that usually starts in the kidney cells (especially in the kidney tubules) and over time is a type of cancer that can spread to surrounding tissues or distant organs. In most cases, it is symptomatic at an early stage. because it does not give any information, it is diagnosed incidentally on imaging. Diagnosed at an early stage kidney cancer is a disease that can be completely cured by surgery.

Persistent pain in the lower back or flank area
Sensation of a mass on the side of the abdomen
Unexplained weight loss
Constant weakness and fatigue
Fever (without infection)
High blood pressure or anemia
Note: Many patients can be diagnosed by routine ultrasound or CT scan alone without experiencing any symptoms.
Risk Factors
Smoking
Obesity
High blood pressure (hypertension)
Long-term use of certain pain medications
Family history of kidney cancer
Genetic predisposition (such as von Hippel-Lindau disease)
Diagnosis Process
Ultrasonography: Used for initial evaluation
CT (Computed Tomography) and MRI: The size, location and spread of the tumor are determined
Urine and blood tests: Functions and tumor markers are evaluated
Biopsy: May be necessary in suspected cases, but not always performed
Treatment Methods
Surgical Treatment
It is the most effective treatment for kidney cancer.
- Partial nephrectomy: Only the part with the tumor is removed (kidney-sparing surgery)
- Radical nephrectomy: Removal of the entire kidney and surrounding tissues
It can be performed with laparoscopic (closed) or robotic methods.
Ablative Methods (in selected patients)
- Radiofrequency or cryoablation: Especially in patients who are not suitable for surgery applicable
Targeted and Smart Medicines
Specific drugs can be used against certain mutations as a result of genetic analysis.
Targeted Therapies and Immunotherapy
Drugs targeting specific molecules are used in cases of recurrence or advanced stage after surgery. Immunotherapies that strengthen the immune system have also increased their effectiveness in recent years.
