Tongue Cancer
If recognized early, it can be treated with high success
Tongue cancer is one of the most common types of oral cancer. Usually on the sides of the tongue or subsurface and may spread to surrounding tissues over time. When diagnosed early can be completely cured with surgery, but if it is too late, speech, chewing and swallowing can affect vital functions.
Tongue Cancer Symptoms
Non-healing sore or ulcer on the tongue
Pain when talking or eating
Swelling, stiffness or tenderness on one side of the tongue
Bleeding in the mouth
Difficulty swallowing or feeling stuck in the throat
Swelling of the neck lymph nodes
Restriction in tongue movements
If these symptoms last longer than 2 weeks, they should be evaluated by a specialist.
Risk Factors
Smoking and alcohol use (the risk is multiplied when used together)
Poor oral hygiene
HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) infection
Chronic irritation in the mouth (broken tooth, denture friction)
Family history of head and neck cancer
It is more common in men and individuals over the age of 50
Diagnosis Process
Detailed intraoral examination
Biopsy of suspicious tissue
Evaluation of invasion by CT, MRI and PET-CT
Neck ultrasound and lymph node analysis if necessary

Surgical Intervention
