Laryngeal cancer is a type of cancer that develops in the larynx, part of the respiratory tract. The larynx houses the vocal cords and plays a role in vital functions such as speaking, swallowing and breathing. Larynx Cancer Symptoms
Hoarseness lasting more than 2 weeks
Foreign body sensation in the throat or persistent sore throat
Difficulty swallowing, pain when swallowing
Swelling or mass in the neck area
Chronic cough or coughing up blood
Wheezing or difficulty breathing
Pain in the ears (may be unilateral)
Risk Factors
Smoking (the most important risk factor)
Alcohol consumption
Acid reflux (laryngitis reflux)
HPV infection
Air pollution or chemical exposure
Male gender and over 50 years of age
Diagnosis Process
Endoscopic examination (laryngoscopy): Direct observation of the larynx
Biopsy: Pathologic examination of a tissue sample taken to confirm the diagnosis
CT and MRI: The size of the tumor and its relationship with surrounding tissues are evaluated
PET-CT: Used to map invasion (metastasis)
Staging
Early Stage (Stage 0-I-II): The vocal cords are affected to a limited extent. With treatment, the voice and function can be preserved.
Advanced Stage (Stage III-IV): The tumor has spread to deeper tissues and/or lymph nodes.
Treatment Methods
Surgical Treatment
- Partial Laryngectomy: Part of the larynx is removed, voice function can be preserved
- Total Laryngectomy: The larynx is completely removed; a permanent tracheostomy (windpipe) is opened to the patient
- Neck dissection: Lymph nodes are removed if there is spread
- Tissue repair is performed with reconstructive surgery when necessary
Radiotherapy
It may be an alternative to surgery in early stages. It is also used as supportive treatment after surgery.
Chemotherapy / Targeted Therapies
It is applied in advanced stage patients or as a combined treatment with radiotherapy.
Speech Therapy and Rehabilitation
After surgery, patient-specific speech training and swallowing rehabilitation is planned.
