Early diagnosis of this insidious disease is decisive for life expectancy
Pancreatic cancer develops in the pancreas, an important part of the digestive system,
It is a serious type of cancer that usually shows symptoms late and can progress rapidly. The most common type
pancreatic adenocarcinoma, which is located in the head of the pancreas and affects the bile ducts.
may be symptomatic with jaundice in the early stages.
In cases detected at an early stage, long-term life chances increase with surgical intervention,
In advanced stages, quality of life can be preserved with systemic treatment approaches.
Pancreatic Cancer Symptoms
Persistent pain in the upper abdomen or back
Unexplained rapid weight loss
Jaundice (yellowing of the whites of the eyes and skin)
Loss of appetite and fatigue
Fatty stools, indigestion
Nausea, vomiting
Emerging diabetes
Itching and dark urine
Note: Symptoms usually appear late in life. Therefore, individuals in the risk group careful screening is important.
Risk Factors

- Family history of pancreatic cancer
- Type 2 diabetes
- A diet high in fatty, processed foods
- Genetic predisposition (BRCA mutation, Lynch syndrome, etc.)
- Being 60 years of age or older
Diagnosis Process
- Blood tests: CA 19-9 (tumor marker), liver function
-Ultrasonography and CT: the first imaging modalities
-MRI / MRCP: Detailed evaluation of the bile ducts and pancreatic ducts
- Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS): Biopsy-guided examination of the tumor
-PET-CT: Used for metastasis screening and staging
- Biopsy: Taking a sample of tumor tissue for definitive diagnosis
Pancreatic Cancer Stages
- Stage I-II: Tumor is limited, surgically removable
- Stage III: Spread to neighboring vessels; chemotherapy is usually administered first
-Stage IV: Distant organ metastasis present; systemic treatment is planned
Treatment Methods
Surgical Treatment
- Whipple surgery (pancreaticoduodenectomy): Pancreatic head, bile ducts, stomach and
the duodenum is removed
- Distal pancreatectomy: The tail or body part of the pancreas is removed
- Lymph nodes are also cleared
- Surgery is usually applied in early stage and limited tumors
Chemotherapy
- Can be administered before (neoadjuvant) or after (adjuvant) surgery
- It is used to prolong life and reduce complaints in advanced stage patients
Radiotherapy
- In some limited patients, it can be applied to shrink the tumor or in preparation for surgery
Targeted and Immunotherapy
- Applicable in selected patients with genetic mutations (e.g: BRCA positive patients
PARP inhibitors)
