Burns, damage to the skin by heat, chemical, electrical or radiation trauma as a result of the injury. They can be superficial or deep, extending into muscle and bone tissues. They can also cause damage. Early and correct intervention reduces both the risk to life and long-term prevents scars and deformities.

Types and Degrees of Burns

1st Degree Burn

- Only the outermost layer of the skin is affected (e.g. sunburn)


- It is characterized by redness, mild pain and peeling

- Usually heals without scarring

2nd Degree Burn

- Both upper and lower layers of the skin are affected


- Blistering, pain and crusting are observed

- While superficial ones do not leave scars, deep 2nd degree burns may leave scars and discoloration

3rd Degree Burn

- The skin burns in all layers; nerve, vascular and muscle tissue may also be affected

- There may be no pain (if nerve endings are also burned)

- Dryness, blackness and roughness of the skin

- Requires surgical intervention and tissue repair

4th Degree Burn

- Deep damage involving muscle, tendon and bone tissue

- Requires advanced surgical and reconstructive interventions and long-term rehabilitation

Burn Treatment Process



Acute Period (First Intervention)

- Cooling, sterilization and infection prevention of the injured area

- Fluid-electrolyte supplementation, pain control if necessary

- Dressing or surgical planning according to burn depth

- Follow-up in burn centers (for large surface burns)



Surgical Interventions and Repair

- Necrectomy: Surgical removal of dead tissue

- Skin graft: Covering the burned area with skin from a healthy area

- Flap surgery: Repair of the area by moving muscle or subcutaneous tissues

- Treatment of contracture (pulling): Prevent limitation of movement, especially in the joint areas for
